The bottle is marked Extra Special Beer, which kinda sold it to me. Here's the crappy babelfish translation of the beer description: "Bitterness of the malt, [hurutei] flavor it spreads The beer which is done composed (with [shinhara] language meaning of the "red jewel")". Sounds good, eh?
Supped in Takayama, while trying to find the news and realising that the only thing that passed for news that day was the death of an accused kiddy-fiddler (goodnight sweet prince). As far as I can tell, this is a doppelbock. The appearance is about right - an oaken brown with a frothy off-white head, which is sadly lacking in retention and lace. It has a bready, slightly spicy aroma, which is good for the style, but by no means exceptional. Fortunately, things pick up with the flavour, which has full on brown bread, mixed in with ample dark fruits, a touch of spice, some coffee and hints of cocoa. This actually reminds me a lot of the doppelbock that my good friend Derek had brewed at Amsterdam, right down to its medium body and drying finish. The alcohol is there and I'm feeling relaxed.
Its not spectacular, but its good stuff and solidly made.

We love reviews (150 characters or more)! Check out: How to Review a Beer. You don't need to get fancy. Drop some thoughts on the beer's attributes (look, smell, taste, feel) plus your overall impression. Something that backs up your rating and helps others. Thanks!
