We discovered this out-of-the-way brewery in Amherst, Maine (on Route 9, also known as the airline, partway between Bangor and Calais). They have just started production within this past year, and their tasting room is open only Friday through Sunday. It is, however, well worth the effort.
We had a flight of six -- all on tap -- consisting of the Tippy Canoe (my favorite and reviewed here), the Caddis Fly Wheat Ale, the Union River ESB, the Downeast India Porter, the Lazy Paddle Milk Stout, and a blond ale, the official name of which escapes me right now.
The Tippy Canoe is a nice light (5.2%) wheat ale with a strong hop punch. It pours a rather murky dark amber (not as murky, however, as , say the Smittynose Finast Kind IPA. The head is modest.
To the nose the Tippy Canoe suggests pine mixed with a touch of butterscotch (Fuggles?), which is even more apparent in the taste. There's an initial smoothness but that is followed by a rather biting (but not unpleasant) aftertaste.
Definitely a nice brew.
