Served on tap in a pint glass
Appearance – The beer is served a deep brown color with a one finger head of fizzy foam. The head fades quite quickly, leaving a little bit of foamy lace on the sides of the glass.
Smell – The aroma of the beer is rather light overall with it containing a mix of a roasted malt smell along with a little bit of a caramel and some molasses. Along with these aromas comes some lighter notes of a nutty aroma as well as a little bit of toast and grain.
Taste – The taste begins with a lighter roasted and slightly sweeter taste with some caramel and a little bit of chocolate. As the taste advances the roasted flavors grow slightly more intense with a little bit of a grainy taste accompanying the increase in the roast. The caramel sweetness increases just a bit at the end, but the chocolate flavors fade, and with a little bit of earth and grass that comes at the very end, one is left with a rather odd, slightly dark, slightly bitter, and slightly sweet flavor to linger on the tongue.
Mouthfeel – The body of the beer is quite thin with the carbonation level being rather average. A thicker body would have certainly helped the darker flavors of the brew, but with that said, the thinner body was good for the low abv. of the brew, so overall it was OK.
Overall – Ahh… A decent brew, but not really all that well balanced for a porter. I do have to give them credit though, the whole style of a session porter is one hard style to hit right. One to give a chance to but nothing all that exceptional.
