Collaboration with Buoy Beer Company

You know when you take your big fancy boat out for a spin but the wind picks up, throws you off course, and makes you knock over your fanciest bottle of wine? Yeah...we don't either. But we do know good friends and good beer. That is why we teamed up with our buds at Buoy to make this Export Pilsner. A strong pilsner we lagered on French oak spirals for 3 weeks and then another 3 weeks on stainless. Batten down the hatches!

Look: Straw yellow and clear with a thick, white head, settling to 2-fingers
Aroma: Pilsner malt, biscuits, noble grassy hops, hay, spicy-earthy hops. 3-4 minutes after slightly warming, oak/wood aromas are noticeable as well
Taste: Pilsner malt up front – bready, followed by a very unique woody flavor and then finishes with a spicy, earthy hop finish – clean and crisp
Mouthfeel: Solid – light but not thin. Quenching and not as dry as I would think
Overall: Just saw the description on the can about the French oak spiral aging which accounts for the woody notes in this pilsner. Tasty and unique offering from two solid breweries. A winner and I would have this again

Bright and clear medium yellow body; nice gently rising carbonation; thick, white head; sticky sheets of foam line the glass. Excellent aroma; mild graininess with gentle spicy hops; toasted crackers. The taste leads with a strong and tasty wheat cracker flavor; hop bitterness is subtle and balanced with the malt base. Medium body; crisp and generally dry mouthfeel.

This is an incredible pilsner, offering plenty of grain goodness and hop bitterness. The beer brings some great complexity for the style to the palate. Very delicious.

Can 12/10:
Straight golden Pilsner body with a minimal amount of haze. Foamy white to just off-white head. Lacing is pretty strong.

Nose is heavy on the oak spirals, which would take away points from a pure interpretation of the style, but then again, the spirals weren’t used to make this more like a Pilsner. The same can be said for the taste, though the oak is relatively less strong.

All that aside, there is still a little fruity floral scent that comes through the oaken walls, and the bread-like Pilsner malt is available with a nice strong sniff. Taste actually starts with a husky grain and dry grass Noble hop, though the oak is forward enough to make those a memory quite quickly. A bit of dry grass and light spice hops and a hint of dry white wine struggle to rise to the fore. An oaken vanilla flavor peeks out in the end. The beer dries out with a sawdust like quality that works for me, but could lean a tad too wooden.

So this can is fairly fresh, I’d assume the wood notes may fade over time. Presumably this would bring a little more balance, which leads me to want to experiment with this (and if it were local, I would). I happen to like the bold oak notes today and don’t feel the base is totally lost.

Canned the 10th of Dec. Purchased at ABV.

A clear orange with a dense, white head with excellent retention and lacing this looks great. The nose is soft, doughy and deep. There's actually a lot going on, from the sweet bready notes of Vienna malt to the cooked notes from the Melanoidin malt , topped with an earthy, spicy hop character, a blend of lemon and black cumin and then, finally, rounded out with a slight buttery note from the oak spirals. Intriguing. The palate opens mildly bitter with spicy, earthy hops with honey, mildly caramel like. Quite a bit of bread and dough, but there's also some buttery oak that isn't wholly welcome. The malt depth is present, though they don't entirely work. Mildly sweet with a touch of heat on the finish, this is solid.
