Pitch black with a creamy, dense, long-lasted tan head. Nice.

Piney hop character dominates the aroma. Okay but lacking many of this things that make a stout a stout.

Massive, astringent pine character with massive bitterness. Some roast. Mild sweetness. What went on here? It just isn't pleasant.

Medium full body with moderate carbonation.

This had potential but is ruined by a massive dose of pine and bitterness. Simply unpleasant.

A pint at the brewpub overlooking Mirror Pond in downtown Bend.

This beer appears black, full stop, with no discernible highlights, and two fingers of thin creamy ecru head, which leaves some attractive walls of cascaded lace around the glass as it slowly recedes. It smells of chocolate caramel - the gooey kind - earthy hops, and warming alcohol. The taste is light roasted malt, chocolate liqueur, black fruit, treacle, licorice, and more booze warming. The carbonation is quite light, the body solidly middleweight, smooth, and somewhat syrupy. It finishes off-dry, mostly from the latent chocolate and sweet receding booze.

A decent enough imperial stout, with the big booze just a tad off-side, but enjoyable enough overall.
