my favorite of the beers we had in here at 2nd story, and overall one of the more ambitious recipes on a menu full of safe beers, at least from what we could tell. its a nice eggshell luster near black color on the pour and it holds its foamy head nicely. bakers chocolate in the aroma right away, bitter and pure, with a dry rye spice in the nose as well, really interesting without appearing too rich. the flavor is similar, a dusty cocoa powder, unsweetened note from the malt, maybe some actual nibs in here too, it has that round low end to it that may be beyond the grain. a pretty significant portion of rye must have been used as well, it comes through the darker malts nicely, maybe a dark rye is even used, roasty and spicy still, a nice complexity here, and my favorite element of the beer. subtle roasted bitterness in the finish, a lighter body for a porter, and a pleasant chocolate note left on the tongue with just a trace of the rye malt, really nice. good with a hearty bowl of clam chowder in here, i really liked this one. balanced and drinkable.
