Particularly with its flavor, this is one of the better relatively low ABV stouts I've ever had. It punches much higher, in a word, than its weight class. Like LiquidAmber, I'd look forward to seeing an imperialized version of this. If it had a much bigger body, more depth, and kept everything else, flavor-wise, in tact, it could be an exceptional offering. Even so, it's really good now, as a welterweight.

Poured into a Fremont small snifter. Pours a very dark mahogany brown, appearing nearly opaque in the glass, with a half finger medium brown head with good retention and lacing. Nice aroma of sweet dark toasted malt, fresh coffee and light chocolate. Flavor follows with dark toasted malt with a light char, milk chocolate and fresh, rich drip coffee. Finishes with coffee, malt and light hops. Medium bodied with sharp carbonation. I have to say that at first, although the flavor is great on this stout, it seemed a little attenuated. Until I realized that the aroma and flavor left me expecting a much bigger stout, maybe even an imperial one. At 5.2%, this really is quite flavorful. The base stout has good lightly smoky malt and the coffee flavor is fresh and well balanced, as well as supported by some chocolate. I liked this a lot, but was left thinking that I'd really like to see the imperial version of this one. Well done.
