Poured into a Fremont small snifter. Pours a very dark red brown with a fine, two finger khaki head that keeps growing after the pour. Aroma of biscuit malt with a little caramel, berries and rye, nice. Flavor is biscuit malt with a hint of caramel and good rye, red berries, dates; finishes with dry biscuit, light bitterness and mild berries with rye tartness. Medium bodied with nice creaminess. This smelled instantly like a big red ale on opening and the flavor followed. Its relationship to Wreathing Havoc, Three Magnets' winter rye beer is clear in the flavor. This one has a more forward aroma and in quite inviting. The beer is malt forward with a well balanced light rye tartness. Red ale berry flavors are balanced by an almost woody dry malt component. The ABV is almost too well covered, I finished half a glass without noticing. Needs to be sipped slowly, but for a malt lover like me, that was difficult. Not for the malt averse.
