Split a pounder can with my cousin... he got this as part of a Tavour box. Canned 5/8/18, so just over two months old. I walked by this brewery a bunch of times when I stayed in Olympia for a music fest a few years ago, but never really went by at a time when my friends and I wanted to drink or had time to do much else, but this is making me wish I stopped by! I'm sure I'll have the opportunity to go to Olympia again some day, because it was a great little city... anyway, enough about that, what about the beer?

Pours a deep orange color... almost burnished orange, honestly... much darker than expected. Nice, thin head of slightly off-white suds and solid, if spotty lace around the glass. Medium hazy surface and light expression of carbonation. Mostly hazy body, but the slight translucence lends some amazing shimmering tones if I hold the beer up to direct light. Swirling my glass builds the head back up a bit as well. Overall, super solid looking beer with a beautiful hue to it.

The nose is sticky and surprisingly caramel-forward... it almost reminds me of an older school "hoppy red" ale (Nugget Nectar or G'Knight anyone?) but with some lighter notes of passion fruit and guava. Oniony aspects along with earthy/herbal hop notes and slight grapefruit come across here and there as well, but this really is redolent of toffee and soft caramel candy. Absolutely not a "modern" take on the DIPA, but it's bringing me back to simpler times in my beer-drinking past, and I appreciate that.

I didn't get much ethanol in the nose (other than the requisite baseline amount for a semi-strong DIPA), but it's much more apparent on the tongue. A bit of fusel alcohol gives way to ripe grapefruit, passion fruit, papaya and guava flavors with a sticky toffee center. The finish has more pithy grapefruit bitterness, some earthy (almost savory) notes and strong dankness. Resinous pine and fresh-cut grass with orange and grapefruit linger after each sip.

The feel on this one is fairly heavy-bodied, which I did not initially expect... once I saw this beer in my glass and gave it a good sniff, however, I came to appreciate that I was getting myself into a rather intense sipping experience. Sometimes this reminds me a little bit of a more rough-around-the-edges version of Founders' ReDANKulous red IPA, and I feel like that ends up being a solid comparison given the way the malt and hops work together to deliver a balanced and satisfying amber-ish IPA.

pours a very lovely pink tinged amber/orange, reminiscent of guava juice. With an egg nog colored head that isn't large but is very persistent.
smell is rich and almost savory with notes of plum, grape, orange, bubblegum, and just a hint of the sharp edge of pineapple. Very complex and delightful.
taste is dominated by fruity flavors; apple, peach, white grape, and some of the tangier citrus/pineapple. There are also very prominent floral notes and even a bit of earthiness, like wet leaf litter. Overall a pleasant enough taste but there does seem to be a bit of dischord among the flavors.
mouthfeel is about spot on for the style, very soft, very pillowy. Full like a big stout without getting into that syrupy malt zone that big dark beers can carry.
Overall this is a nice addition to the style. It's flavors are pleasant and uncommon enough that I guarantee this is just what someone out there is looking for. Definitely checks the juicy boxes and delivers a very very drinkable 8.5% that does a good job of displaying the hop flavors.

I had this beer on-tap in a tulip at the Taproom at Pike Place in Seattle.

Appearance: murky orange hue with a thin layer of ivory foam atop. Great color!

Smell: citrusy hop aroma with a little malty sweetness. It's decent enough, but it lacks in intensity.

Taste: citrus hops with a little bit of toasty malt that is a little autumnal in character. It's nice.

Mouthfeel: medium body with a big carbonation and a great creaminess for the style. Lovely!

Overall: a pretty solid double IPA. Could use a bit more aroma, but nice.
