A variation on our RCW 70.160, named for Washington State's smoking ban, this smoked porter features a hearty dose of cherry wood smoked malt. Notes of leather, tobacco, and fruit abound.

The cola brown body is a little thin at the corners, but that massive velvety stick brown head is a real beaut. Eventually works its way down to a thick froth that clings to the edges and leaves incredible lacing.
Smoke supports the malt char without stepping into the front stages. More cold ashes than smoky campfire, but it is still there. Solid middle set draped beneath.
Much smokier than I remembered the base brew, more char too. Charcoal. Drier finish. Bitter cold coffee. Tight but aggressive carbonation with a thinner body, but it works really well with the char/smoke and dryness.
I think I like this one slightly more than the base. I don't know if the difference in smoke level is an inherent characteristic of using the cherrywood chips to smoke vs whatever type of wood the base used, or a different amount of smoke time or just adjusting the recipe or what, and they were both tasty, but this one is definitely a bit more what I was looking for out of a bomb smoked porter.

Poured into a Fremont small snifter. Pours a very dark mahogany brown, appearing nearly opaque black in the glass with a half finger dark khaki head with great retention and nice lacing. Aroma of dark toasted malt, campfire smoke, light coffee, cocoa and raw leather. Flavor follows closely, with a little more char in the malt and a mild dark dried fruit note in the finish. Nice lingering smoky malt. Medium bodied with light creaminess and good mouthfeel. I think they nailed it this time. I really liked the base RCW 70.160, but noted it had more char flavor than smoke. This one is smokier with a lighter char character. This really does have an aftertaste that is reminiscent of drinking a porter in the classic smoky room. Not sure I can tell the difference in cherrywood, but the mental image is pleasant. This is a quite fine smoked porter, recommended. They are getting some really good graphic art on these cans. This one is very retro.
