Poured into a Fremont small snifter. Pours a slightly hazy, medium to dark reddish orange with a fine, one finger khaki head with great retention and thick lacing. Aroma of dry biscuit malt, slight caramel, dates and figs, classic biscuity old ale profile. Flavor is biscuit malt, hints of molasses, caramel, dates and figs with an odd, but pleasant spicy fruit element that is reminiscent of Belgian yeast. Finishes malty with wisps of fruit esters. Excellent medium bodied with moderate creaminess and smooth, full mouth feel. I had a long day of working outdoors today and needed something flavorful and substantial tonight, and really couldn't ask for more than this great old ale. Not quite as darkly malty as many old ales, but the faintly fruity yeast really gives a depth to this that is delightful. Very English, but very robust. One of the more interesting and satisfying old ales I've had. I really hope this is brewed again. I'll certainly keep a few of these for a while. It is about 6 months old now and has aged beautifully for a moderate ABV ale. Well named and well made.
