Poured into a Seattle Beer Week pint glass. Pours a very hazy, light caramel amber with a healthy two finger white head with good retention and lots of lacing. Aroma of pale wheat malt, citrus and lightly dank hops, lemon and grapefruit, hints of overripe tropical fruit. Flavor is wheat, citrus hops, lemon, grapefruit, apple, an odd sweet vegetal component. Finishes with long lingering non herbal hop bitterness with a little lingering citrus and apple. Medium bodied with light creaminess. An odd duck of a wheat ale. There was a mild uh-oh moment in the middle of taste the promised stark bitterness without much support (probably why there are few bitterly hopped wheat ales), but the little bit of light apple flavor redeemed this in the end. The high alpha content of Simcoe is obvious here along with its citrus leaning flavors. I think this would have been too astringent and stark without the apple cider component, but I think they just pulled if off. I went from a little trepidation and confusion to actually looking forward to each taste of this, and ended up liking it as a drinkable diversion. An idiosyncratic wheat ale that skates on the edge, but makes it home.
