Poured into a Fremont small snifter. Pours a medium brownish orange with a two finger off-white head with great retention and solid lacing. Aroma of dry caramel and biscuit malt, light an dark dried fruit and a touch of gin juniper. Flavor is biscuit and lightly caramel malt, gin, dried apricot and citrus. Mild juniper and dried fruit in the finish. Medium bodied with light to moderate creaminess. The gin really changes the character of this barleywine, although it is not unbalanced. This reminds me of some of the cocktail strong ales that have become popular lately, although it mostly tastes like a dry barleywine that has some gin in it. The base Skook barleywine malt is a sturdy one and supports the gin quite nicely, although the juniper makes the caramel and biscuit flavors taste more citrusy and lightly piney. The aftertaste is very nice and lightly gin dominated. Unusual and fun to drink.
