I always arrive here by Train. Once alighted at Marsden Station, a walk over the lovely stone bridge that straddles both the tracks & the parallel running Canal & then a short 5 minute walk down the steep hill. Once at the bottom in the valley, you will see the River Colne & at the other side where the road crosses, is the Riverhead Brewery Tap.
Converted from a former Co-Operative Grocery Store & opened in 1995, it is an old large stone building thats fits in well with its surroundings. There are two entrances, one on the river-side in front of you as you come down the hill & the other on the road side.
Up the small flight of stairs & through the river side entrance, the smallish bar is immediately to your left, with a raised seating area up on your right. Further round to the right is the well designed Brewery, which is behind a wall with a viewing window into the opened out cellar area. Ironically the toilets are right next door to the Brewery, cradle to grave - only feet apart!!!!
Serves its full range of regular beers at all times, when available. Last time I was there the range was;
Sparth Mild (3.6%), Butterley Bitter (3.8%), Deer Hill Porter (4.0%), Cupwith Light Bitter (4.2%), Black Moss Stout (4.3%), March Haigh Special Bitter (4.6%), Redbrook Premium Bitter (5.5%), they are all named after local Reservoirs. Occasionally serves Specials brewed for local events. In addition to the exciting & varied beer range, it also has a real Cider.
Often many of my weekend walks would start & finish in Marsden as it provided a rewarding finishing point & was an easy Train ride home. Serves about 10 other outlets, but I rarely see the beers out of the Brewery.
A very nice, quiet, relaxed pub, that sells a great range of high quality house beers, especially the Sparth Mild which is my favorite & particularly accomplished for its low gravity. Only serves Cold Sandwiches, but they're good. Thoughtfully laid out, it has wheelchair access & a disabled toilet, both sometimes sadly lacking in establishments these days. Popular with Real Ale enthusiasts & Walkers, many of whom often detour from the Moors for a quick Pint. You may well be served by the Owner & Brewer, Philip Holdsworth, as he is often behind the bar.
A Very Highly Recommended Brewpub, one of the better ones.
