Choosing a stout category for this proved a little difficult. Described by the brewery itself, it's a pastry desert stout. With an ABV of 10.5%, it's also an imperial stout. Yet, the additional lactose could make this a milk stout. The complications can drive one to drink, so let's get started. The emptying of a pint can into a clear glass Imperial pint mug begins things. It's a typical stout pour, with a modest beige head resting above a black coffee brown brew. There certainly is much sweet orange, vanilla and cocoa to smell. The nose is already sure that this is a desert stout. First, it's a very smooth beverage, perhaps the lactose contributing there. But unlike many, the milk solids here don't in any way make this sticky or chalky, the way many milkshake beers end up. It may run a little sweet, especially at the onset, but this is one well-rounded stout. The roasted malt, cocoa nibs, citrus aspect of the oranges and a taste of the alcohol bring enough contrast to its sweetness that it works very well. Probably best of all, none of the added flavors dominate, so there's a delightful layering of tastes. With a high ABV that only augments the taste, a very smooth mouthfeel, complex layering of tastes that somehow integrate into something very nice and only a mild sweetness, this is one great find. To be fair, this is a collaborative effort with the Appalachian Brew Club. If this is an example, there should be more such collaborations.
