BOTTLE: .5L. Brown glass. Unbranded pry-off cap. Generic label art & design.
Reviewed live as a dunkel lager per the label. Served cold into a pilsner glass at low altitude in Kuopio, Finland. Purchased at a Prisma supermarket there for 4.50 euro. Expectations are average given the brewery.
4.5% ABV.
No bubble show forms as it's poured.
HEAD: ~4 inches wide. Pale khaki colour. Creamy enough. Smooth. Soft enough. Not real full or thick, but adequately so on both counts. Consistency could be better and more even. Complexion could be still better.
Retention is nice - ~4-5 minutes.
BODY: Opaque dark brown. No yeast or sediment is visible.
Appears well-carbonated. Far from unique or special for a dunkel lager, but generally inviting.
AROMA: Faint chocolate malts and raisin, brown bread, cream, shallow notes of dried prune, shallow notes of dried plum, either fennel or anise, and bready yeast. Hints of nuts. The malts are definitely brown/schwarz, and it has a nice dunkel lager aroma overall.
No hop notes, booze, or off-notes are detectable.
TASTE: Evokes brown bread with some fruity notes (raisin, plum, maybe prune) in the third act. There's no hop profile or booze. A definite bready yeast character guides the beer as supplementary cream and caramel notes emerge to complement the brown malt and bready malt backbone.
Average depth, duration, and intensity of flavour. This is well balanced albeit simple and somewhat shallow, with very limited subtlety and intensity of flavour.
TEXTURE: Smooth, wet, well-carbonated, plump, medium-bodied, and adequately thick, with fair heft and weight on the palate.
This texture complements the taste well, but there isn't a harmony between mouthfeel and flavour.
OVERALL: It's nice to see a darker lager available in local supermarkets, but this can't hold a candle to world-class dunkel lagers. Not a beer I'd get again unless I was desperate for a good dark beer (which can easily happen in Finland). Worth trying, I guess, even at its 4.50/.5L price point, but not a phenomenal beer. Absolutely drinkable, though, and a nice departure from the helles & pale beers usually found on Finnish shelves. Its breadiness is its best characteristic, making this a beer that pairs well with rye bread & Karelian pie.
