.5l bottle served cold into a pilsner glass at low altitude in Kuopio, Finland. Expectations are average; this is my first beer from this brewery. Purchased at a Prisma supermarket in Kuopio, Finland. Reviewed live as a pale ale per the label.

BOTTLE: generic label design. Brown glass. Best before 3/2016. Unbranded pry-off cap.

4.5% ABV.

No bubble show forms as it's poured.

HEAD: ~1 inch wide. White in colour. Nicely foamy and frothy. Nice fluffy consistency. Fair complexion. Leaves uneven inconsistent lacing as it recedes. Retention is above average - about 3-4 minutes.

BODY: Looks more like a hefeweizen than a pale ale; its opacity and haziness suggests a lack of filtration. Not the clean transparent body I expected. And it's more of an orange than a copper to boot.

It's a decent appearance for a pale ale, though it's noticeably not to style.

AROMA: Has a nice floral hop aroma, with notes of juniper twig and evergreen supplementing. Malt backbone is surprisingly light, with pale malts, yes, but also lighter malted barley - maybe Munich malts, or even wheat malt?

Aromatic intensity is average.

Suggests a pale ale with an odd hop profile atypical of the style. Nevertheless, it seems like a pleasant beer.

TASTE: Indeed, the hop profile is odd - even to the degree that the beer is thrown out of balance. It's oddly herbal and twiggy, with juniper and other dry berries manifesting, as well as faint evergreen. The malt backbone isn't as clean or distinct as is ideal in a pale ale; I get pale malts and clean barley. The hops don't seem well matched to the malts. Depth of flavour is average. More of a citrusy or even just more of a traditional floral hop character would be nice.

Flavour duration and intensity are average.

Not gestalt, though it does have fair cohesion. Its hop profile is just wrong for the style, making this a weirdly built pale ale. There's no subtlety or nuance of note. The flavour profile is simple and plain.

TEXTURE: Smooth, wet, and somewhat refreshing. Slightly overcarbonated. Has a nice softness to it. Medium-bodied, with adequate thickness and heft on the palate.

There's not a harmony of texture and taste, but this mouthfeel does suit the flavour profile well in a general sense.

OVERALL: An odd pale ale with a strange emphasis on juniper twigs, this pale ale showcases none of its hops well. Where is the fresh citrus of citra, the onion of simcoe, or the fragrant floral character of columbus? Still, it's nice to see an American pale ale available in the Finnish market. I wouldn't buy it again, but it does make me curious to try Iso-Kallan's other beers. Drinkable but forgettable - though not do to neutrality or blandness. It just doesn't have the right hop profile at all.
