BOTTLE: Brown glass. Simple label art. Best before: 03/16. 50cl. Unbranded pry-off cap.
4.5% ABV.
Purchased at a Prisma supermarket for 4.50 euro and served cold into a pilsner glass at low altitude in Kuopio, Finland. Expectations are low; I can't see a Finnish brewery doing a bitter ale correctly.
Reviewed live as a bitter ale per the label.
No bubble show forms as it's poured.
HEAD: ~2.5 inches wide. White colour. A bit thin and weak. Not foamy or frothy at all. A bit pathetic, actually. Retention is well above average - ~4-5 minutes. Leaves little lacing as it recedes.
BODY: Murky copper. Lacks vibrance and appeal. Not really clean. Not translucent, clear, or transparent. Dull. I see no yeast or sediment.
Looks okay. I can't say it's real inviting.
AROMA: Pale malts. A hint of buttery diacetyl. Dry berries (maybe juniper?). Has about a 1/10 sourness in terms of intensity. Biscuit malt. Vague fruitiness - fruitcake, perhaps?
Sweetness/bitterness balance seems decent. Has no pronounced hop profile. I find no yeast character - including any English ale notes. No booze.
Suggests a dull unbalanced brew with no interesting characteristics whatsoever.
Aromatic intensity is average.
TASTE: Not as buttery/diacetyl-ridden as I feared. Has vague fruitcake fruit, some English pale malts, maybe some Otter malt, and some biscuit malt. A kiss of butterscotch. Maybe some light toffee.
Underwhelming and unbalanced, with no depth, complexity/intricacy, subtlety, or nuance whatsoever.
Average duration and intensity of flavour.
Subpar build.
TEXTURE: Smooth, a biteen, unrefreshing, and medium-bodied. Thickness is off the mark, as is its heft. The carbonation is also off, but I can't tell in which direction.
Lacks any harmony of texture to taste.
OVERALL: Downable but underwhelming. Not worth buying at its high price point. This brewery has better ales. It's a generic attempt at a bitter, and lacks any unique or special characteristics. None of the constituent notes are of any interest; the hops and malts are uninteresting. I wouldn't bother with this again, and would caution others from trying it.
