This is one of the first beers I have had in this style but to my mind this one is very similar to Scottish Strong Ale. Indeed this beer reminded me very much of Founders Dirty Bastard. So those of you who have read my review on that will notice some similarities.
Appearance - Dark ruby tea like colour same as you get in well brewed cup of Assam. Thick foam head that really locks in the flavour very well, just like on Dirty Bastard! If this was a Scottish Strong it would be great.
Smell - I was getting notes Raisins, prune, sweet fudge and liquorice. I would call the aroma very complex with a lightly boozy end.
Taste - Sweet up front with a lot of fudge and raisins. This initial sweet malty front develops into more bread and pastry notes and it almost reminded me of a hobnob biscuit at times. Finally the liquorice comes in towards the end with the bitter hop and a reasonable boozy tone riding through the whole thing but just as in Dirty bastard it is never over powering or out of balance!
Mouth feel - Full and creamy with a lovely finish that is nicely warming, spicy, drying and mouth watering all at the same time. I cannot say it was as good as DB but it was not a kick in the arse off it.
Overall - All I can say to sum up is this is for one of my first in the style I like it very much and will drink it again when I come across it. At present though it is not easy to get in NI....
