A 330ml bottle with a BB of Dec 2016, so it's rather out of date. Acquired ages ago from Trembling Madness in York. The name and label are fairly cryptic and don't give much away - it's not clear why this is called Hot Toddy. Does it contain lemon, honey or spices? We shall see....
A: Poured into a Duvel tulip. Bottle conditioned. A deep, hazy marmalade-amber hue with fine suspended sediment and good carbonation. Yields a large head of creamy white foam that lasts for a minute or two before reducing to a patchy surface layer.
S: Aroma of tart, earthy yeast with hints of mild caramel malt, a touch of smokiness, faint lemon/citrus, vague stewed leaves and a delicate mustiness in the background. Acidic but otherwise very hard to place.
T: Tastes of sour lactic acid with notes of subtle caramel malt, earthy yeast, mild lemon, a twinge of honey, faint stewed leaves and a lingering mustiness. Pretty sharp and bone dry but no bitterness to speak of.
M: Mouthfeel is smooth, tingly and dry, with spritzy carbonation and good body. Somewhat astringent - strips the palate. Aftertaste of sourness, subtle lemon, a hint of malt and earthiness.
O: Drinkable but weird. This is classed as a Gose, which I guess is correct but there's nothing on the label to indicate this. Looks alright, while the aroma and flavour are dominated by lactic acid sourness, lemon, faint malt and earthiness. Decent body. Generally OK; I'm just a tad confused about what the brewer was aiming for. But perhaps that's how it is when the brewery is called Mad Hatter. No need to hunt it down unless you really like sour brews.
