Blue Collar Brewery Inc. "Hefeweizen"
on tap at the brewery on 1 September 2018
Notes: Looks a lot like a witbier. It's not as cloudy as some wizens, and not as orange in color, more of a yellow gold. Short head of bright white where a full head of fluffy foam would normally be. That's kind of OK though, there are a lot more examples of hefeweizens in Germany than just the ones that are imported to us in the U.S. The aroma is fairly limited as well, but again, this seems to be a lighter version of the style, and it's just 4.5% abv. I get yeasty clove clearly, but less banana, and again, that's OK, I'm guessing they might have used Weihenstephaner yeast, or they just fermented a little cooler, or didn't really stress the yeast at the beginning to get those fuller notes. And of course the flavor follows. There's some wheatiness to the malt, but not too much, and I'm guessing they might have kept the percentage down a little bit to try to avoid a stuck mash. That would also explain to a certain extent its clarity, or lack of cloudiness I should say. In the mouth it's medium bodied and gently crisp. It's an easy drinking and refreshing beer, a little lighter perhaps than what you might be used to, but still good.
