22oz Bomber
$9.99
Binny's Willowbrook
Control Freak pours with a sunset orange duskiness, dusty orange at the top of the glass fades into tarnished golden at the base, Dirty white foam rises to two fingers on the pour before slowly falling to a proud crown. As the head falls it leaves impressive, sticky lace in its wake coating 100% of the glass in foamy film that clings. We're off to a promising start.
The nose is a little sticky, as in caramel maltiness sticky. The hop profile is interesting. It's a big fistful of saturated orange and resinous notes. The orange is bright with flesh and peel together while the resin weaves through seamlessly so it's somewhat earthy and fruity. The resinous quality grows exponentially as it warms. There's enough of a caramel, graham cracker-y maltiness to try and even things out and a touch of peppery booze on the backend.
The flavor builds on the nose nicely. While it has your classical orange and grapefruit notes, pith and flesh, it also brings along a healthy dose of resin that borders on herbal but doesn't quite make it. The citrus flashes up front and the resin takes over on the back. All this is bolstered by a caramel malty base that manages to balance things out, almost. Again, peppery booze adds depth on the swallow. I like resinous IPAs.
As big as this beer is, 11.2%, it's bound to have some setbacks in my eyes. One being a body a bit heavier than I normally like, though it fits this particular style of IIPA well. It does feel a little sticky up front but the clean booziness dries out the swallow and actually leaves me wanting more. This beer is going down surprisingly fast.
I'm a fan of this beer, it seems old school to me. A big resin bomb with citrus characteristics and a malt base to keep the pace. I appreciate that. The bittering is moderate, the resinous qualities highly enjoyable, and it's one sipper of a beer. Been a long time since I drank an IPA this big. I'd buy this again if the price was a couple bucks cheaper but for the first time....I'm a happy man.
