This one was poured into a chalice. The appearance was a black color with a half finger white foamy head that quickly died off into the beer. Barely any lacing clung around the glass. The smell started off with dark chocolate malts and then as it warmed some light chocolate malts entered in with a light sugary sweet. The taste was mainly sweet through the chocolates. There was a long lingering dark chocolate aftertaste that bled into a dry finish. On the palate, this one sat about a medium on the body with a fairly decent sessionability about it. However, I must admit that there’s a slight watery aspect to it. Overall, interesting take on an abbey dubbel as I didn’t get the normal Belgian spices and subtle fruits. With a somewhat watery palate, I’m not exactly sure if this would be one I’d come back to.
