Imperial stout aged in Scottish Islay whisky barrels from Ardbeg Distillery for 12 months. A complex malt bill gives the beer a full body with intense aromas of smoke and peat followed by flavours of espresso, malt and dark chocolate.

Delightful Islay whisky barrel-aged imperial stout.
Presentation: 330 ml can. Sober and elegant label with a mocha background where an organic stain-like shape rests under the name of the brewery. Short descriptive narrative noting the main characteristics and main flavor profile. Displays best by date (24-03-28), and Alc. by Vol (11,3%) Poured into a snifter.
L - Very dark brown pour, settling with shines of mocha and a good -looking 1/2” tan head, medium retention, good surface memory and some nice fading lace.
S - Rich nose: peaty character over roasted malt, hint of chocolate over espresso, dash of sweet char.
T - Rich barrel-aged malty feel, roasted notes over the sweet smoky character, has a nice dash of lingering hop bitterness to support it. Shy chocolate and some coffee notes try to push up the peaty whisky profile with an insinuation of vanilla.
F - Knocking on a full body, and hinting at a sticky feel over delicate and subtle carbonation, it has creamy gestures that ride over the boozy but nicely-balanced flow.
O - The beer shines in its peaty complexity. It is not shy of the barrel but it is not overpowering while keeping a very high character. Neither too hefty or boozy dry, it has a wonderful and enticing layered balance that is wonderful to enjoy as a slow sipper.
Notes: This definitely hit a perfect spot for me when I had it first in Amsterdam as a session closer. And big cheers to Vinnie who hooked me up with a couple of cans to take back home. One has to have an affinity or a curiosity for the peaty Islay profile in an Imperial Stout form… And if that is the case this is a wonderful delight.

On tap at the brewery today, the beer pours a blackish brown color with good head retention and considerable sticky lacing all around. This beer looks pretty good. On the nose there's considerable smokey peat, with underlying burnt toast, vanilla, licorice and coffee. Pretty intriguing really. The flavor profile replicates the nose pretty closely in this moderately sweet impy stout, with the smoke component coming on strong on the finish. Mouthfeel is medium bodied, with a moderately long, smokey finish. Alcohol is well integrated into the flavor profile, so drinkability is pretty good.
Happened to be in Amsterdam for the evening, and this place was close to my hotel. So I stopped on in. Glad I did. This was an enjoyable, well crafted ba impy Stout. Would order again.
