32 oz. crowler poured into tall mug
(filled on 2/17/18 at the brewery; courtesy of @tongorad)

L: darkest dark brown, almost purple, topped by thick head of beige foam over 2 inches tall; super sticky head with a little lacing on the way down; keeps a fluffy thick collar and most of a skin; beautiful brew ... hard to say if it's murky or just too dark for light to pass through it, but either way, it's a beaut!

S: roasted bakers chocolate, lightly sweet at first with a growing fruity sweetness as it warms ... toasted apricot/peach kolache, dates ... lots of bread malt ... almost like a chocolate-covered donut at times

T: just a hint earthy and "darker" than the nose, though there's plenty of the roasted bakers chocolate similar to the aroma; slight bitterness/medicinality either from some hops, the burnt malt or simply the alcohol, but the "medicinal" quality is so slight as to be easily ignored; the lingering aftertaste of slightly charred wood is a highlight ... the malt in this beer is definitely not pale two-row

F: lovely ... plenty of carbonation combined with a solid middle weight ... somehow the mouthfeel seems like it's helping the overall "moreish" quality of the beer

O: loads of flavor and like most schwarzbiers relatively easy to handle; between Catskill's pils and this black lager, I could go months drinking just the two ... what a fantastic brewery! this beer in particular is a roasted malt showcase; it reminds me of a good "moreish" porter I've had, only better

Pours not quite clear mahogany brown leaning toward chestnut. Some honey hues around the edges. Fat off white head that was loathe to fall. It left sheets first and then rings. The black lager is very dramatic. The nose is a touch of roasty elegance. A dry unsweetened chocolate biscuit. Only a cool whisper from hops. The hop pepper makes up for the lack of sweetness on the palate. Finishes dry and with a silken moment at the very end of that shows bitter chocolate and walnuts. The hops leave the tongue tingling lightly from a mild bitterness.

This is Catskill's greatest beer, imo. Every nuance and detail has been completely nailed- from the balance of roast malt flavor, base malt 'nutty' background, residual dryness, bitterness, seamless blending of hop aroma and flavors to the malt flavors, that silky/milky mouthfeel- all at just the right levels and in perfect balance and harmony. Made for 'session' drinking, and gets better with each successive glass. One of the best Black Lagers in the US, outstanding job!
