Another homage to our local fly fishing heritage honors a fly tyer from Maine. Her name was Carrie Stevens. The Gray Ghost was created to fish the between times, in the water when the insects were not abundant. This pattern mimicked a minnow so well that it even enticed the most wiley of trout. This beer is a Munich Helles, which is a traditional German spring seasonal beer. Gray Ghost clocks in at 6.1% ABV and is a beautiful light gold color. It's malt character is slightly nutty and the beer overall has pleasing dryness to it.

A: The beer is clear light yellow in color and has a light to moderate amount of visible carbonation. It poured with a short bright white head that quickly settled down, leaving a bit of delicate lacing on the surface and a ring of medium-sized bubbles around the edge of the glass.
S: Light to moderate aromas of nutty malts are present in the nose.
T: The taste has flavors of nutty malts along with notes of grainy malts. The hops contribute a light to moderate amount of bitterness.
M: It feels light- to medium-bodied and clean on the palate with a moderate amount of carbonation. There is some dryness in the finish.
O: The aromas and flavors of nutty malts in this lager are quite unique.

Pours a clear yellow color with visible carbonation. A large foam head retains well.
The nose displays some hops aromatics, including notes of lemon, lime and grass. This is followed by aromas of bread, cracker and biscuit.
In contrast, the taste opens a bit more on the malt forward side. Sweet and slightly doughy with notes of cracker, biscuit, lightly toasted bread and honey. Emerging yeast and hops spices evoke flavors of green apples, floral notes, grass, pepper and lemon. The bitterness is mild overall.
Medium bodied with a smooth mouthfeel. The finish is semi dry with notes of malt. The carbonation is moderate.
In many ways it is consistent with the style. However, the higher ABV yields a tad more sweetness than what I usually prefer for the style.

Pretty mediocre helles lager - a little too full on the body, a little too chewy with the grains - not quite as light and crisp as I'd like, but a decent beer - mild grains, mild bitterness, touch of bitter hops - cool as a one-time thing, but not a top lager...
