Pours a clear brown color, almost amber and red in appearance. A modest head surprisingly dissipates quickly.
The nose opens with notes of dark toast, nutty malts, dark fruit, and complimented by sweet spicy notes of cinnamon, clove and allspice. Aromas of fresh toasted biscuit, brown bread crust, toffee, dark chocolate, raisin, plum, cherry, mint and bubblegum.
Complex and full flavored with rich sweet amber and dark, nutty malts leading the way, contrasted by holiday spices, fruit, alcohol and a gentle earthy hops bitterness. Flavors of biscuit, toffee, dark chocolate, cherry cola, bubblegum, raisin, plum, fig cinnamon, allspice and clove.
Full bodied and smooth. The finish opens slightly sticky and boozy but becomes increasingly dry into the drink. The carbonation is moderate to lively.
I mostly enjoyed this American interpretation of Belgian Dubbel, it was complex and interesting. My only nitpick is the appearance (poor head) and that it doesn't mask the booze and lighten the body the way some of my favorite Belgian examples do.
