On tap at Platform. A really interesting take on the style. All of the quinessential barleywine elements were present in the base beer: boozy warmth, malt undertones - but the addition of the Brett funk added something new. Unlike the Belgian yeast added in Weyerbacher's Tiny, which I thought would pair well with the style, but ended up failing in the execution - I was initially suspicious of how well Brett funk would match with a sweet, thick style like a barleywine. The sour elements were executed well, but at their core seemed to butt heads with some of the barleywine's intrinsic sweetness. While the contrast made for a truly unique beer, and one absolutely worth trying, the innate opposition of the Brett and the barleywine held this beer back from being anything truly award winning.
