This tropics inspired milkshake IPA is here for your wintry blues. Surging with bright passionfruit and honeydew melon that drifts alongside a juicy and luscious mouthfeel. Finishing off sweet yet refreshing.

This marks the CANtinuation of my (Un?)Happy New Jumping Off of the New Platform Beer Sunday (Week 755)! I have been redding up my house during my CANvalescence from surgery & putting together a number of brewery horizontals in doing so. I had planned, even before its announcement about its sale to A-B/InBev, to drink a buncha beers & a seltzer from Kleveland's Platform Beer Co. for this week's NBS. I was disheartened to hear of the news, especially having read the GI story. I am not one to boycott a beer due to their acquisition by a large corporation, but it did take some of the wind out of my sails.

From the CAN: "Milkshake Style IPA"; "Malts[:] 2 Row[,] White Wheat[,] Malted Oat[,] Flaked Oat[,] Hops[:] Ekuanot Cryo[,] Mosaic Cryo[,] Yeast[:] Voss Kviek[,] Adjuncts[:] Passion Fruit Puree[,] Vanilla[,] Lactose[,] Plato[:] 18[,] IBU[:] 22"; "Ohio Craft Beer".

Wow! A lot of adjuncts in this one. I Crack!ed open the vent & then upturned it for an inverted Glug since clarity was not a CANsideration. I watched in rapt fascination as it foamed up to form just under two fingers of dense, foamy, rocky, tawny head with decent retention. Color was a murky Golden-Amber (SRM = > 5, < 7). The other day, I had difficulty recognizing passion fruit when it was paired with hibiscus. NOT in this case! The nose was redolent with passion fruit. It has a musty, musky earthiness that is seCANd only to papaya & followed by guava & I CAN recognize it from a mile away. I used to subsist almost solely on FF&V and especially tropical fruits & they still resonate very strongly all of these years later. Mmm. Mouthfeel was medium-to-full, not quite creamy, but definitely soft. The taste was moderately tart, very tropical fruity & quite nice. I was worried that the vanilla might make it too sweet for my liking, but I think that they employed it to round the edges. This had a tart bitterness that might be off-putting to some, but I liked the way that it put a different spin on the use of southern hemisphere hops. It could be CANstrued as gilding the lily to add guava puree to these hops, but not in this case. Instead, it made for a pronounced guava flavor while shunting the lesser tropical fruit flavors to the side. Finish was fruity, but not sweet. Instead, it had a slightly tart semi-dryness. Mmm. YMMV.

12 FL OZ can
Served in an oversized, stemless, wine glass

This beer pours a hazy amber color. It is topped with an inch of beige head that leaves decent lacing.

It has a big tropical nose with the passionfruit coming through nicely. I also get citrus aroma.

It has a big passionfruit flavor to go with the smell. It is juicy and has a complimentary citrus flavor with a little grapefruit in the finish.

Medium bodied with a thick, creamy mouthfeel

This is an enjoyable fruity IPA.

A: The beer is hazy pale yellow in color. It poured with a half finger high white head that left lots of lacy rings of bubbles around the sides of the glass and a very large patch of bubbles covering the surface.
S: Moderate aromas of tropical fruits are present in the nose.
T: The taste follows the smell and in some aspects resembles fruit punch with flavors of oranges, passionfruit and pineapples.
M: It feels a bit shy of being medium-bodied on the palate and is a little creamy and smooth with a moderate amount of carbonation.
O: This beer has a nice smooth and creamy mouthfeel like a milkshake IPA but I found that this beer really exemplifies the aromas and flavors of tropical fruit hops.

This is a "Milkshake Style IPA". Canned on 12/20/18. 12oz can poured into a tulip. Pours a hazy and cloudy burnt yellow; fluffy off-white head that falls leaving nice retention and lacing. It looks like orange juice and your typical "New England IPA". The aromas are floral along with some tropical fruits. Some mild citrus notes as well. Subtle hints of sweet vanilla. Malts are there. The flavors are on the sweeter side. Lots of apricot along with some peach and orange. Some fresh grass. Some hints of vanilla in the mix. Low bitterness. Finishes juicy. Malts do their thing. Alcohol basically goes unnoticed for the most part. Mouthfeel is on the lighter side of full-bodied with moderate to active carbonation. It's very fluffy, smooth and easy to drink.

This is a solid brew. It's more or less what you would expect from a "Milkshake Style IPA" or a "New England IPA". It's slightly unique. One minute I'm not crazy about it and then I'm digging it the next. Platform does alot of these kind of IPAs, and this might not be my new personal favorite from then, but it's still enjoyable stuff. The aromas and flavors really open up as it slightly warms. I like it.
