From a growler (fresh and one day after fill) into a tulip.
A-The beer is pretty good looking. A tall, mocha head of dense foam hangs around for a while and leaves nice lacing on the glass. The brew beneath is pretty much black with very little visible carbonation.
S-The aroma is an interesting mish-mash of flavors. I get some citrus and lightly tropical notes from the hops, as well as some minty, herbal flavors. I also get some cocoa and wet earth from what I assume is the malt bill. Then there is a flavor that keeps reminding me of blueberries. Hmm.
T-The taste is similar to the smell with very light bitterness and some mild tropical (think sweet orange, pineapple) hops. That same earthy, leafy flavor is back, as is the cocoa damp grain flavor. A hint of fruity alcohol creeps in too. The beer is sorta jumbled, but not too far off from being really good.
M-The body is on the full side for a beer calling itself an IPA, even if it is a black IPA. The carbonation is pretty active and the finish has a slightly coating feeling.
O-I could not quite peg this beer, which isn't too surprising given that black IPAs are such an odd style anyway. I found myself really liking the beer and then thinking it was boring and messy with each new sip. Anyway, I'm willing to give Mockery another try.

We love reviews (150 characters or more)! Check out: How to Review a Beer. You don't need to get fancy. Drop some thoughts on the beer's attributes (look, smell, taste, feel) plus your overall impression. Something that backs up your rating and helps others. Thanks!
