this is a crazy beer that they brought out for their anniversary party, a belgian dubbel, but spiked with boysenberries as well as cherries apparently, and aged for some three years in cabernet barrels. its absurd liquid, really good, really thick, really strong, really unique, i have not had any other beer like this in my life. super still from the tap, leggy and dense looking, with a deep brownish red color to it. aroma is fruity right away, some of the tannins and the berry notes from the wine come through boldly, as well as a little tartness from the boysenberry and cherry, which are jammy and concentrated and sort of broken down in here. i get notes of cola, cocoa, and belgian yeast, mild overripe banana, molasses, and dark candy sugar, lots of oak too. the flavor is huge and complex and distinctive too, just like the aroma, with quite a lot of the fruit coming through the huge base beer. the belgian yeast is somewhat subtle for a beer this strong, residual sugar and booze are both through the roof, and the wine barrel is awesome, rich and fruity and unifying here. the maturity is insane, but its almost like its past its moment a little bit. some carbonation and liveliness would really help this, its heavy as can be right now, stagnant in the glass and hard to drink through. i appreciate and respect this more than i really want to consume it, but they have done something pretty cool here. i like the fruit in a dubbel, i like the boysenberry and cherry together, and overall this is one of a kind. cool offering!
