Letra - Cerveja Artesanal Minhota "Tonka Ride"
44 cl can
7,44€ @ Letraria Obidos, Portugal
Notes via stream of consciousness: It's poured a very dark brown body beneath a tan head of foam. It's brewed with Tonka beans which is really interesting. They have a rich, aromatic, and complex flavor profile, often described as a blend of cinnamon, almond, and cherry. Unfortunately I'm not getting that from the beer. It mainly reminds me of chocolate covered espresso beans. Is there a little bit of a cinnamon-like spiciness to it? Perhaps, but I'm not getting almond or cherry. Maybe the dark malt and bitterness it just too much to let it through. It is an intense beer! In the mouth it's medium bodied and crisp. Maybe if I'd ever tasted an actual Tonka bean I'd get it but I haven't. It's still a solid beer.

25 cl pour at Letra’s beer garden in Porto, Portugal.
Adding tonka to Stout is a thang in Europe. First time tried, I thought it ‘interesting’, because I couldn’t put my finger on where I tasted it before. It’s illegal in the US.,. something about the liver.,
But now I recognize it and it’s a lot like cinnamon infused shoe polish, I imagine.
The mouthfeel is nice though.
