Don't let the name fool you! While high in American hop character this beer also has a very rich and Crisp crystal malt aroma and flavor. This imperial red ale is well balanced with intense hop flavor and a big malt backbone.

A: Hop Whompus has a great burgundy color to it. Like the darkest shade of amber with some brown and ruby mixed in. Nicely clear and well-polished look. A smallish layer of khaki foam comes to rest out to a halo along the brim. Less stick from this one with just a few small dots and streaks left upon the glass.
S: Raisin, dark bread, and toffee with a classic combo of orange citrus and resinous pine hops. Pretty solid with a real nice balance to it. While I would say more on the malty sweet side the hops are fairly expressive here.
T: Big toasty caramel malt notes suggest toffee and sweet raisin bread followed with tangerine peel and pine saplings. The hops are resinous in nature with a moderate amount of bitterness to help cut through the malts and bring in a welcomed balance. Finish is somewhat dry with a hint of alcohol spice and fruity esters showing. A very nice take on the Roja Americano.
M: Moderate to upper moderate filling body with a nice creamy texture and light amount of spritz from the carbonation. There is a mid-level amount of hop bitters to help dry and constrict out the finish which is fairly dry. Slightly resinous linger that lasts.
D: A very nice take on the hoppy Amber. Seems Bagby has this style nailed with the warm toasty malts and classic C hops in good harmony together. Not to say this is the best I ever had but I did enjoy this one quite a bit.
