April 1st, 2015 - Great name and weird beer, the License to Kilt is an off the wall Scottish experience, dizzying in its unexpected flavors. Deep and auburn, it looks like any other Scotch ale, but the smell features the aroma of Virginia tobacco and dirt, with a slight fruit note and a touch of tanginess. The flavor also has a slight raspberry tang and a huge hoppy front, with some pineapple in the aftertaste. I also get a weird vibe of malt vinegar, which might just be my subconscious conjuring images of UK cuisine, but the acidity is clear. This is a strange beer, and when I am done with the taster I am both happy to be finished and craving just a little more.

On tap at Hollister Brewing Company.
Look: a purplish red, small head.
Smell: pretty mild. Generic sweet.
Taste: a bit smoky, with a prominent bitterness and a coffee-like sweetness. Alcohol asserts its presence. Can't get past how much this tastes like coldbrew coffee. Nearly great, but something a bit off.
Feel: creamy, fairly full-bodied, with just the right amount of carb around the edges.
Overall: there are a lot of solid or even great elements here, but a few odd spots keep it from really coming together. Still recommended.
