Die Frische der Natur is the motto of this 5th generation brewery that was founded in 1860. The Export pours up a med bubble head that fades very quickly and leaves the Bier flat on top after a couple of minutes. The color is a very deep straw shade. The aroma is of spent coffee grounds and musty. The malt character is light and no hops were to be spoken of. The Bier tasted flat. Not as in carbonation but as is flat! Cardboard and paper were the first signs something wasnt kosher. Old coffee filter doesnt sound good and doesnt taste good either. Once I got passed this I found the Bier to be balanced nicely between bitter and sweetness with a slight lingering bitterness at the end. Judging many a homebrew competition taught me how to get through very upfront flaws and find out what else is going on. Its not always easy and this was not so enjoyable. Ill give them the benefit of the doubt here and assume I got a "bad" bottle although the date was good(only two months in the bottle and there was way too much oxidation for such a short period). I hope someone else out there has better luck.
