i was literally shocked to see such a well crafted double ipa in costa rica, i surely did not expect these american styles to be done so well, and i was blown away to learn this was a collaboration with cigar city, how did these guys find each other i wonder? the name of the beer i think is fear of an empty glass or something like that, which is cool, and the beer is great, very american in style, fine hop complexion, and relatively easy drinking a lighter bodied for the style as well. its golden yellow in color and just a little hazy under a tall white head. the aroma is just like the flavor on the hops, they did a good job with the bittering/flavoring/aromatic hops, as they line up well. fresh cut grapefruit and mango come to mind, this is very tropical but somehow not particularly familiar on the varietals or combination of varietals, a fruity and new school as it is. citric bitterness comes in pretty quickly and lingers through the finish, there is a nice punch of fresh hops to it, more intense than even other double ipa types we had in costa rica. dry in the finish too and without a ton of body, which makes sense for the warm and humid weather, and carbonation is way high. really enjoyed this unlikely collaboration, delicious ipa.
