After three months of fermentation in our 80 hL French oak foeders, we refermented Meerts on 2 lbs/gal of blackberries for two months, and immediately transferred it into a freshly dumped rye whiskey barrel for an additional five months. Blackberries have an inherently woodsy, earthy character that is perfectly complemented by the charred barrel’s vanilla notes and the spicy, fruity spirit left saturating the wood.

So I guess I am in the minority on this one, but I think the rye barrel and the blackberry meerts clashed in the taste: rye and funk and brett fought each other up top on the palate, and down below the earthy barrel drops shoe leather and tobacco into my blackberry sour ale with currant, raspberry seeds, and vinegar accents. Just didn't meld, so it tasted messy. Smell is more focused on the barrel and berry interaction, but the sour notes are muted though brett gets through with hints of tootsie roll. Feel is huge for a wild ale, slightly boozy given the abv, and chewy. The dark magenta pour with white webbing and spotted lacing is by far the best aspect

Medium purple reddish body. Tart blackberry, dry tannic blackberry, light lemon, medium acetic acidity, touch of oak, not particularly sweet but not too sour either. Nice mild brett, medium acidity that is tempered by the barrel a bit. Solid.
