2021 Vintage of this offering....

A- Thin off white head that becomes more of a ring around the inside top of the glass, after a decent initial showing of a couple fingers thick....the carbonation seems to be somewhat aggressive, as I can see quite a few thin, rapidly rising columns of fizz rising to the top of the somewhat clear, medium dark brown colored liquid. As for the lacing, well it shows some promise, with a number of small patches clinging to the inside of my glass, however, they do slide back in rather quickly, leaving an oily looking film in their wake. Overall nothing too special to see here.....average stout in appearance.....good thing the labelling is cool with the metallic purple theme happening!

S- I get initial sweet smells of cola, and root beer, which are balanced out with more traditional aromas of chocolate, coffee, burnt/heavily charred barley malts, dairy cream and yeast. I think what I am getting is a bit of a turkish delight candy bar, with perhaps a tinge of licorice ice cream, and even as it warms, there are noticeable nuances of Coca Cola....interesting!

T- I get an overall astringent, metallic flavor that would remind me of sitting in a tin can for too long, but I believe this is from the higher alcoholic content. Once the palate adjusts and gets through this initial shock, there are notes of chocolate, chicory infused black coffee, and an alcohol inspired tang that doesn't hit me quite right. The finish is dry, herbal, and Earthy. Overall this category is a little disappointing.

M/O- The mouthfeel is medium I would say, and the carbonation is more aggressive than I would like it to be, but it isn't in your face either. The drinkability is average, and I would not want to be looking for another after I get through this pint worth. Overall I find this to be a little rough around the edges and not quite what I have in mind when I want a big dark stout....it needs some refining for sure....as it stands, I am not going to be sad to see this one fade off into the dead moon night

Appearance - Pours a dark jet black with two fingers of bubbly tan head that quickly fades.

Smell - roasted malts, earthy and leafy hops, cocoa, hint of coffee bean, hint of star anise (licorice), and earthy yeast.

Taste - roasted malts followed quickly into a metallic star anise flavour. The earthy and leafy hops are there followed by the cocoa, coffee bean. The earthy yeast finishes the brew off.

Mouthfeel - Medium to full bodied with light to moderate carbonation. Finishes smooth with the metallic star anise lingering.

Overall - An agreeable stout. I can't seem to get over the metallic star anise (licorice) notes that linger. If it wasn't for that then this brew would be a stand out. Not quite sure what happened in the brewing process, but it is disappointing.

650ml bottle - kind of a depressing sounding name, TBH.

This beer pours a solid black hole, with the scantest of amber basal edges, and four fingers of puffy, loosely foamy, and bubbly brown head, which leaves some decent broadly webbed lace around the glass as it quickly sinks away.

It smells of roasted, bready and doughy caramel malt, bittersweet cocoa powder, cafe-au-lait, a hint of anise spiciness, and some plain earthy, musty, and dead floral hops. The taste is gritty and grainy caramel malt, sort of metallic licorice spice, day-old coffee grounds, cold cream, medium dark cocoa powder, a hint of bruised pome fruit, and more well-understated leafy, herbal, and lit-up floral hoppiness.

The carbonation is pretty tame in its milquetoast frothiness, the body a hefty middleweight, and mostly smooth, but for a touch of that weird spicy essence perhaps not in the best friend-making mood here. It finishes off-dry, the malt, cocoa, and spice carrying the lingering day.

Overall - yeah, this one comes off as a tad strange, but not in a particularly bad way. It's an Imperial Stout, to be sure, but that spicy character really asserts itself, and gets kind of annoying in the end. At least the 20-proof booze quotient has the manners to keep its hands inside the car windows at all times - at least for the time being, that is.
