a style i really want to see more of. crazy how these guys have gotten their beer all over the market in both bottles and draft in such a short time. i am glad of it too, because the prices are troubling, so a little draft is a nice way to taste through their stuff. had this one at barrels and bottles in golden, which is a radical spot with a great beer list. its pretty pale in color for the style (which i have an admittedly limited sample size). its more of a brown ale in appearance, pretty clear too, and with about an inch of tan lace on top that settles quickly. it smells great, not that virgin appley sour you get from a fast hot kettle sour, but more of a sour mashed patient sour thats pretty mellow really. it doesnt have the malt build of stout or porter like some do, its not that roasty, and its absolutely not that full bodied. i think its nice that its as mild as it is, just earthy black malt, not so roasted like the unmalted barley. clean too in the finish, and the sourness is probably only a three or a four out of ten, so its very approachable without a ton of acid. i have heard it take some flack for being so low in abv, yet still being equally priced, which i think is an unfair criticism, its not the booze we pay for (speaking for myself), its the experience and the process, and both are unaffected, even improved by its drinkably low abv. i wasnt a huge fan of these guys at first, but the latest few i have had have all been excellent. this may be a little light and thin for the black ale side of things, and definitely not sour enough for the pucker heads, but i like it a lot for what it is, and could happily consume several of them.

Lite in texture, big on taste. Some roasted flavors that wear well on the palette.
