Smoked Porter

Inspired by the Rauchbier of Germany, Morro Castle is brewed with a grist of nearly 50% Applewood smoked malt. Toasty, rich & chocolatey, the beechwood lends its smooth and savory smokiness and tobacco-like notes.

Poured from a pint can, the body is a dark black with a small tan head. Not much lacing to speak of.

Aroma is tobacco, smoke and coffee.

Tate follows nose. The body carries more smoke than the nose. The smokiness approaches a smoky ham flavor. The coffee flavor comes mid swallow and balances the smoke. A passing hoppiness also is in the mix, but not for long as the smoke dominates.

Mouthfeel is supported by good carbonation but is medium.

A good porter for fans of smoky beer.

Smokey tobacco leaf Aroma. Taste starts smokey with elements of coffee, espresso and chocolate underneath. This can definitely satisfy that itch for smoke.

A “mystery beer”, wrapped in Christmas paper. I've forgotten who sent me this.

12oz can poured into 10oz goblet. Poured a solid black color with just a thin ring of tan head that had no retention or lacing.

The aroma had lots of roast, so much so maybe there’s coffee in it.the base malts were fine.

Fairly similar on the tongue, with the roast/coffee being much stronger.

If this is a Stout, it’s on the thin side. If it’s a Winter Warmer, it’s just right.

Drinkabilty is fine, if perhaps a touch more roast than I prefer.

Overall, a pretty nice brew, would drink again.

12 oz. can poured into tight nonic
(couresy of @TongoRad)

L: classic black-and-tan look, pushes up thick head of beige-tan foam about 1/2- to 2/3-inch tall and sticky, keeps a fluffy, soapy-bubbled collar of tan foam; shows a steady little stream of sediment early in the pour, so it's pretty murky ... might be 80-90% opaque, only the edges appear clear ... some of that is because the color of the beer is deepest darkest brown with dark orange/amber highlights; some lacing on the way down and in very cool little patterns

S: chocolate, coffee, red wine off the pour; as it warms and settles a nice layer of smoked malt starts showing up; almost with each passing minute the smoke grows ... from light to full-on BBQ pit ... it's almost a rauchbier light at times, peaty but also meaty, like some sausage on the pit; about 1/3 into the glass the early sweet aromas are mixing back in with the strong developing smoke aromas ... wild, cool mix

T: dark and earthy, yeast, some smoke ... charred pecan or oak wood; as it warms the sweeter notes show up little by little, red wine, espresso, baker's chocolate; halfway into the glass it's settled on a lightly sweet dark chocolate up front followed by a wall of earthy charred malt

F: well carbonated, relatively light, simple and almost elegant ... yet it's study and has that "moreish" quality really good porters often have ... I keep reaching for the glass quickly, and it's the mouthfeel I'm convinced that has me doing that

O: complex beer with some definite smoke character; the super sweet nose followed by the first few sips of earthy/smokey flavor is a strong opening act; the way this beer evolves and opens up is a heck of a journey as the nose gets more smokey and the flavor gets more sweet; if this lived in my distribution area, it would be in my fridge often;

DATE: November 25, 2017... OCCASION: Christmas tree in place, the season's preparations have begun... and a Thanksgiving beer showdown with Cigar City's Maduro... GLASSWARE: Abita pint... pours a velvet-black body with a finger's worth of brown head that rings out to a reasonable thickness... first scent is definite rauch, with its signature beefy bacon, though a plasticine waft detracts from its overall experience.... slick, slightly oily palate with a buzz at the throat...flat cola, perhaps... a lingering, roasted smokiness mingles with an islay-style band-aid to produce a sweet, cloying porter that pales to its challenger today... altogether, an uneven offering that doesn't deliver the tobacco or coffee as promised... a miss that can be tolerated....

From my parents, this was poured into a nonic pint glass. The appearance was a black color with a finger’s worth of white foamy head that slid off at a decent pace. Not much lace. The aroma had some sweet meaty smoky tones over top of some ash and earthy to grassy hops. Light coffee. Touch of vanilla. The flavor leaned into the sweet meaty smokiness. Followed through in the aftertaste and on into the finish. The palate was between light and medium bodied with a fair sessionability about it. Carbonation felt fine. ABV felt good. Overall, pretty good smoked beer I could give another shot if offered.

Black in color and impenetrable to light. There's a fingernail of brown resting on top. The enticing aroma of smoked dark malt greets my nose. I'm tasting a moderate dose of dark, smoked malt. The mouth is lightly oily and a tad chewy.

Forgotten Boardwalk Brewing "Morro Castle"
on tap at the brewery on 15 January 2017

Notes: Interesting name. I'm pretty sure that Morro Castle is a real place somewhere, but I think this is named after a ship that sank off the coast near Asbury Park. Black body beneath a short head of tan. Pretty good head retention and lacing. The aroma is a little like an ashtray with some mild chocolate and leafiness. The flavor follows with bittersweet chocolate and ashen roastiness. It's fairly bitter. Dry roasty lingering finish with a dull char-like character. Probably my favorite beer from Forgotten Boardwalk.

I am really looking forward to getting The CANQuest (tm) up and rolling again. I have been noodling around with bottles lately as well as making preparations for a recycling run today & this has all CANbined to cause me to lose focus. In case you are CANcerned, the recycling is all "found" aluminum CANs - Red Bull, Arizona, a LOT of Bud, et al. I crush them down and take them for recycling about twice a year. The craft CANs go to Jeff Lebo, at his request. Jeff is the owner of Brewhouse Mountain Inn, which CAN be seen at CANsmartbeerCANs.com. This is how The CANQuest (tm) rolls!

From the CAN: "A Curious Brewery and Refuge"; "Profile[:] Smoke & Tobacco - With hints of roasted coffee"; "Notice[:] Don't go down with the ship [-] Enjoy responsibly captain"; "Smoke-Filled from Starboard to Porter"; "Luxury Cruise Liner Burns off Coast of New Jersey!"; "While traveling to New York in 1934, the luxury ship Morrow Castle mysteriously caught fire, causing over 137 passengers to perish. Crowds rushed to witness the inferno at sea while it burned for days, beached upon the shores of Asbury Park. Murder & arson were suspected, yet the truth remains unknown."

The graphics are some of the best in a while! The captain runs along the main deck while below him, a pair of lovers snuggle in a lifeboat & the portholes are rife with: flames, a skeleton, a pair of aristocrats, a passenger fishing & flames. Lots & lots of flames! One fellow is even descending on a lifeline, with a barrel of liquor below him. Hahaha. We had working portholes on the USS Fulton (AS-11) & during our 1985 Med Cruise, lots of guys fished from the portholes in the berthing compartments! Hahaha. Gotta love these CANs!

I Crack!ed it open, only to get smoke & flames billowing through the vent! Sound the alarm! Ding, ding, ding! Fire, fire, fire! Class Charlie fire in the Chez Woody kitchen! Away the underway Flying Team from Repair Locker 5! Make readiness reports to the bridge! Once we were manned & ready, I had them rig AFFF into the hose line since we had no idea what liquid was afire in the CAN. We upended the CAN for an inverted Glug & watched as the foam began to form atop the liquid. We were faced with two-plus fingers of dense, deep-tan/light-brown foam & I ordered that the hoses be secured in the hopes that the foam would smother the flames. Peering into the smoke, I could see that the liquid was Very Dark Brown to Black/Opaque (SRM = > 34, < 44), allowing light penetration only at the edges. Nose left no doubt that something was on fire! The smoky smell of burning wood led me to question what actually CANstituted the fuel for this one. I had reported a Class Charlie (oil) fire, but perhaps it was a Class Alfa (ash-producing) fire or a CANbination. I decided to take off my mask and take some in my mouth to better make a determination. Phew! Mouthfeel was medium-to-full, not quite creamy, but on the approach. The taste was intensely smoky with tastes of dark chocolate, leather, burnt cigars and more smoke. This is EXACTLY the sort of smoked beer that I like, but I know that I am in the minority. I stood to the side as the rats ran past, abandoning the ship & trying to get away from the smell of smoke filling the interior of the vessel. The captain passed the word to abandon ship, but I was not about to abandon this beer! I loved the way that its smokiness was filling my sinus cavity, to the point that I might not be able to smell or taste anything else for a little while. Suddenly, a fireball exploded through the main stack & I realized that our efforts were futile. I had my hose team secure & we began making our way to the main deck to abandon ship ourselves. I CAN understand why some might abandon this one, but I am not among them. This would be great with smoked Gouda cheese on crackers. Join me ... if you dare!
