Traded for this a while ago but I'm unsure when as there wasn't a date or any printing on the bottom of the can. Hadn't had a beer from Forgotten Boardwalk in quite some time and this one was on par with the rest that I've had from them as it was one of the better Smoke or Rauchbier's that I've had in quite some time!

Not a bad pour to this as the liquid was a dark cola brown with plenty of offsetting head topping it off. A few rings of lacing were left down the back side of my pint glass as I sipped this with the overall appearance being typical for this style. Lots of oak, meat, bourbon barrel wood, and brown sugar in the muted nose as the taste was full of those notes as well. Smoke came through in the taste as this was somewhat dry and lightly carbonated, with hints of caramel malt and berry stickiness rounding out the flavors. As to be expected, I needed a chaser of water to get this down once I finished it off!

Because of the heavy flavors, this felt like it had more alcohol in it than was the case in actuality. I'm not the biggest fan of these beers but once in a while, they're a welcome change of pace if done right. This was enjoyable but something that needed a lot of time to savor and appreciate, as it was something I wouldn't have quite often. If you're having some Carolina or Memphis barbecue, this would pair perfectly with it over a nice fire. Glad I have this a go and to see a beer from Jersey successfully attempt this style!

25 oz bottle from March poured into Carton Dubviant glass.

This is bourbon barrel aged Morro Castle.

L: YUGE head when pouring, it takes a while. Leaves spotty lacing and a cap and ring. Beer is jet black.

S: You get the smoked wood from Morro Castle (the beer, not the ship) plus the oakiness of the bourbon barrel, roasted malts, coffee, vanilla. Only the first two really come at you, the rest are muted.

T: Basically follows nose. Bourbon barrel and smoke are two main flavors up front, with roasted malts. Only tiny hints of coffee on the back end. A bit watery, which the barrel aging really should have taken care of.

F: Light to medium body, Light to medium carbonation (low considering head). Too watery to be considered well-constructed.

O: Almost think it's a step backwards from the canned Morro Castle. The bourbon barrel adds flavor, but the rest of it kind of falls apart.
