Forgotten Boardwalk Brewing "Curiosity #45 (New England IPA)
on tap at the brewery on 09/15/2019
Notes via stream of consciousness: Typical appearance with a cloudy golden body beneath a tall head of bright white foam. The aroma isn't the strongest but it's clearly "juicy" with orange/tangerine, citrus pith, melon of some kind, and maybe a little bit of pine. On to the flavor... wow, definitely "juicy". I'm getting a more tropical vibe with notes of papaya, grapefruit, lime, more melon, guava, and passion fruit. Ahh, there's some dried apricot there as well. Interesting. I don't know that I can call it unique, but at the same time I've never had a NEIPA that was quite the same. I'm glad I happened on this one, I'm going to have to get a growler to take home. OK, back to the beer, It's got a median bitterness to it, and it's nicely balanced. Some chalky citrus pith lingers in the finish but most of the other fruit fades fairly quickly, leaving behind a kind of generic "tropical" note. In the mouth it's medium leaning towards medium-light, and gently bristling and then velvety smooth due to the residual proteins. The head has dropped by now, and in fact dropped some time ago, but there's some great, thin but mostly solid lacing about the glass. OK, I think that about covers it. As noted, it's not really unique, it follows the "juicy" NEIPA blueprint to a T, but it's really well done and very good. I've noticed that all of the beers from Forgotten Boardwalk have improved. In fact, I'm going to have to pick up a few cans of "Pocket Trick Imperial IPA" to take home so I can re-review it. I wasn't that thrilled with it earlier, rating it only as average, but what I tasted today was much more impressive. I wonder if what I had before was old, or maybe just not a great can from a stop in the canning line or something. Anyway, if you're a fan of the "juicy" NEIPA style I'd definitely recommend it.
