Can: Poured a pitch-black color ale with a brown foamy head with good retention and some lacing. Aroma of roasted malt notes with some dry hoppy notes with some green grassy undertones. Taste is also a mix of roasted malt with some dry hoppy notes with green grassy undertones and a dry finish with mild bitterness. Body is about average for style with good carbonation and no apparent alcohol. Nice mix of flavours with good drinkability; body could have been a little bit more creamy.

From a 16oz can, mise en cannette 18/11/17. Served in a 20oz pub glass.

Pours milk chocolate-brown with amber highlights, virtually opaque, with a finger-plus of soft, beige head. Retention is pretty good, leaving a wispy cap, solid collar and thick but slippery lacing.

Meager nose of slightly charred grain with a little smoke and soap.

Taste is clean and bright, woody, woodsy and slightly smoky, dried leaves, tobacco and cold coffee, bergamot and orange peel. Finishes mostly dry with medium bitterness.

Feel is clean, soft and dry with an unexpectedly light body - but dead-on for a black IPA, it's just, looking at it in the glass, you expect it to be thicker. Carbonation is spot-on.

Overall, a fine-drinking, tasty black IPA. There is no booziness or alcohol heat evident and it would be treacherously easy to drink five or so of these and suddenly realize that your head is no longer talking to your toes.

I don't care what anyone says about 'black IPA's' or if they're even a real thing. I love them and this one is a particularly fine example.

A:
Pours a thick opaque pitch black with a decent-sized, airy khaki head that slowly descends to a fat film. Good retention; sticky lacing. (4)

S:
Chocolatey roast, some grainy rye spice with light citrus notes. (4)

T:
Really nice creamy malt character with a bright splash of hops and a peppery bite from the rye followed by a resinous/coffee finish. (4.25)

M:
Soft and rich with a nice, lingering finish, the alcohol is well-hidden, but doesn't hurt the overall impression. (4.25)

O:
This is a very enjoyable beer.
It pours a nice thick black with a billowing khaki head. The aroma is the least strong part, but it definitely improves after it warms up a bit in the glass. There is a real milk chocolate character to it. Beyond that and a whiff of hops not much is going on. The flavor follows with a layered sweet roastiness and bright hops that fade into a puddle of resin and mocha. It feels lovely and is generally drinkable. I liked it and would definitely get it if I saw it again in the future. (4.25)
