A drinkable contradiction – a Black Pale Ale. Braven Black’s earthy, citrus hop undertones accompany the stout-like snap of chocolate and espresso in this dark spin on the classic American Pale Ale. Surprisingly crisp, Black offers a drinkability that is as welcoming to the craft beer novice as it is rewarding to the experienced connoisseur.

On tap at NY Sports Grill, T4 JFK.
Jet; stouty ash; licorice, big char, slight fig, and more roast to end with noble + orange hidden in there somewhere; crisp and light.

Burnt! I hope this lines up as a schwarz or whatever, coz this doesn’t make sense any other way. For people who find Guinness cloying.

Black as night with a thick proud head that lingers nicely throughout, this ale is smooth but tasty with coffee and chocolate notes and a crisp finish. Like this one very much

Braven Black Pale draft tasted at a lower East Side NYC restaurant on 4/3/16. It was a welcome find at a trendy Mexican restaurant.
Very dark appearance with a good one inch head. Lacing clung to the glass as the beer was drunk.
Taste has a prominent roasted malt character with a moderate hoppy background. Very drinkable. The beer's style might be comparable to a typical German schwartzbier. It's at least as good as most of them.

Excellent but it's made in Saratoga not Brooklyn. Big beer in dark, but light package.
Came back to re-try from Park Slope Co-op, one of my favorite beers. Must try 24.
Pleased to be 4th review. It's a Black APA (not IPA) and it's very good, with a great balance of sweet undertones against roast, toast, char, and dry, peppery finish.
A: Black body w tan head. Head lasts, looks good laces a little. Note exceptional.
S: Love the aromas of dark malts with charred wood, peat, and roasted malts.
T: Taste follows the smell, but has even stronger flavors of roasted malts, which linger to the finish. balanced bitterness and a dry, roasty finish. Tastes bigger ABV than it is. Big beer.
M: Medium, prickly and crisp on the palate with a moderate carbonation.
O: It's a Black APA (not IPA) and it's very good, with a great balance of sweet undertones against roast, toast, char, and dry, peppery finish.

Poured out of a CO2 tap, but looks and feels like nitro. Really interesting beer. Drinks more like a porter than a "black" pale ale, but pretty good regardless. Woody bitters and char loaded onto a creamy frame.

On draft. Poured very dark into standard pint glass. Thin tan head with nice lacing throughout the drink. Nose is very roasty with strong malt undertones. The flavor follows the nose quite closely with a slight bitterness from the hips that really works well. Quite a nice, balanced mix of a dark ale and a pale ale.
