Barrel-Aged Imperial Rye Stout
In Partnership with Patuxent Wine and Spirits
The R&B Stout is a celebration of the lives of Ray and Betty Lankford, life-long residents of Calvert County and a couple who embody the history and shared sense of community that brings us together. They have been married for over 70 years, and have spent their lives working in Calvert County and volunteering for the Solomon's Island Volunteer Fire Department. This beer is a tribute to all of the residents of Calvert County, and especially to Ray and Betty. We tip our hats to you, and may we all be so lucky to have a life as well-lived.
In the spirit of Ray and Betty and in honor of Calvert County, the R&B stout is a collaboration between Calvert Brewing Company and Patuxent Wine & Spirits, two of Calvert county's community-focused, local businesses. This collaboration beer is an imperial stout brewed with rye and aged for several months in a Crown Royal barrel, resulting in a dark, rich and spicy brew with a smooth, dry finish.

I managed to have a non-infected bottle of this that was okay, but nowhere near the top tier of barrel-aged stouts. I'm leaving my score the same as a warning.
----
Pours a very dark brown color. The head is two fingers high and khaki in shade. Retention is quite good, but the soapy texture means that not much lacing sticks to the glass.
The aroma of this seems to hint more towards a classic RIS (that just happens to be barrel-aged) than a big, roasty American-style imperial stout. Plenty of dark fruits, peaches, and cherries make themselves known on the nose - this could almost pass for a fruited stout at times. The barrels not only add gentle notes of vanilla (more oak could be welcome, though), but seem to enhance the aforementioned fruitiness. There are mild touches of baker's cocoa, brown sugar, and cream. Something is telling me this bottle isn't quite right, but the cherry notes actually work well with the RIS base.
The flavor is disappointing next to the aroma. In fact, there are quite a few flavors that suggest it's infected - badly so. Long story short: it tastes like metallic cherries with a gentle hint of Canadian whiskey. Not much more can be said.
Meh. This bottle is infected, and that's a damn shame. I know we shouldn't review infected beer, but since this is around $18-20 a bottle at the brewery proper, I feel there should be some sort of warning before someone spends their hard-earned money on bottles that aren't right.
2.33/5: Nothing else to say, this wasn't intended
