Inspired by the Irish laborers who were primarily responsible for digging the Erie Canal, this beer is roasty and hearty, yet extremely drinkable.

On tap at Big Ditch Brewing in Buffalo, NY.
This one pours a glossy looking dark black, with a small white, and lots of lacing.
This smells like your standard take on the style - dry roast, smoke, and dark chocolate.
This is definitely an upgrade from some of the more prototypical takes on the style, such as Guinness or Murphy's. It's a bit richer, with a cleaner and more pleasant and bright roasty bitterness. There's a touch of smoke and cream, with some subtle dark chocolate.
This is creamy, but somewhat thin, with a good drinkability to it.
This is a solid take on a tough to nail style. I feel like this style ends up being roasty water way too often.
