This weizenbock pours an opaque dark brown color with a slight red tint and a medium foamy white head. The smell is of banana, wheat, and some spices, typical weisse beer fare. The flavor is of wheat, banana, some coriander, a little hint of clove, caramel, and dark bread. The body is on the high end of medium. I feel like this is what the Unertl dunkel weissbier should have tasted like. It is like a fairly standard dunkel, but maybe even a little heavier and with some extra dark malt flavors coming through and more alcohol also at 8%. I much prefer it this brewery’s weissbier, which I thought was not very good. It’s not as polished as Unser Aventinus or Vitus, but I quite like it. This is a wheat beer with some serious backbone. I think it’s a solid example of this fairly hard to come by style.
