On draft. Poured from a mini-growler into a Celebrator pokal. Pours a very hazy, almost muddy, orange brown with a thin off-white head that dissipates to patches with slight lacing. Aroma of deeply biscuity dark malt, wheat, dried banana; estery. Flavor is dark biscuity malt, wheat hull, mild cocoa, vague fruitness from the cognac barrel. Finishes malty and biscuity with cocoa, banana and unexpected dry hop bitterness. Medium bodied with light creaminess. An interesting take on the style, with malt flavors that more resemble a biscuity old ale with hints of a chocolatey porter. Wheat is present, but more as mildly bitter whole wheat rather than the lighter wheat of traditional weizens. Although the flavors are unexpected, this tastes nice a malty. The cognac barrel influence is a unidentifiable fruity background, but not much woodiness. There is an unusual bitterness in the finish that feels like hops, but could be an oak barrel influence. Looks odd, but quite different and enjoyable.
