It’s been a couple of years since we released STREET KING, but this brown ale holds a special place in our (black) hearts. Street King was brewed with a blend of British Maris Otter, Brown, and Chocolate malts, along with a selection of specialty crystal and roasted malts.

This current version seems to have NO coffee, but all the same malts. It's very rich and roasted tasting, and perhaps with imagination it TASTES like coffee somewhat. But the flavor is really inviting and is more my idea of a Brown Ale. Rather sweet but some bitterness in the aftertaste. Distinct taste of bitter chocolate with that roasted malt lasting to the end. This is more like a Porter however and about as unlike Newcastle Brown as you can get. Except for the dark red-brown color. Lots of foam, very photogenic in the goblet. From the 16 oz can purchased at Special Brews. Not dated.

Murky red brown, light beige foam.

Earthy, chocolate, coffee. Hard to want better than that.

There and gone but still impressive. Dark chocolate but low bitterness, some heat or harshness from the coffee.

Too dry, I need staining.

16oz can

Pours a finger of fluffy light brown head into my Nonic. Retention is decent and the head lasts a minute or two, leaving a nice film. Initial lacing looks quite nice. Body is pretty darn black, not sure how you can call this a brown, some brown hues when held to the light. Looks pretty good so far.

I really like this nose, you get a clear coffee aroma, but it is not overpowering. Notes of roasted malt, some caramel, vanilla even. A very soft varietal of coffee, with some firm undertones. Really nice.

Flavor surely has more of a kick to it. Fresh roasted coffee dominates. Not quite as good as the nose, but still a nice coffee flavor.

Carbonation is pretty high. Body drinks pretty light. Some sweetness, but quickly balanced by a significant bitterness. Mouthfeel is a little abrasive at times, but I don’t mind too much, not bad.

Drinkability is mixed, the light body is nice, but the bitterness slows you down a bit.

Appearance turned out ok. Lacing was pretty patchy, but not bad.

Overall a decent coffee beer that leans towards the bitter side.
