Pours four massive fingers of white head into my pilsner glass, pretty fluffy. Retention is great, it’s only gone down a finger’s length after some time. Initial lacing looks very nice. Body is pale yellow in color, just slightly cloudy, with a modest amount of bubbles coming up, considering how nucleating this glass usually is. Looks great so far.
The nose is pretty wild on this guy, huge amount of lemon right up front, followed by some very earthy, almost dirty hops, smells like tomato sauce and herbs when it’s heavily agitated. I can kinda get the gin, maybe? But it’s not coming through very gin-like, and I’m a big gin guy. There is a lot going on here, kinda all over the place. While I love the gin inspired idea, I don’t think this works. Could be very possible that barrel aging with a fresh hop beer wasn’t the best idea because these hops may be giving some off flavors.
I definitely understand why I got herbs and tomato sauce on the nose, because I can still somewhat pick that up here, but it does lean more towards the gin side of things. I don’t know how those two things can overlap, but here we are. I guess there are a fair amount of spices in both. Overall, some lemon, light gin spices, tomato sauce. Also kinda picking up a wood presence that is not working well either. Not sure what’s going on really, super confused. Slightly better than the nose though.
Carbonation is on the lighter side, probably from the glass. Body is quite light as well. Bitterness is very minimal, but here. Not sweet or dry, pretty balanced. Good mouthfeel.
Drinkability is ok, this doesn’t taste bad but it doesn’t taste great.
Appearance turned out pretty good. Head eventually dissipated, but the lacing was pretty solid for the most part.
Overall a really weird beer. Went through a fair amount of changes in just the 30 minutes it took me to drink it, and I’m not sure any of them were winners. Also, once I noticed the wood flavor, the nose started to almost smell like a barn, not hay but like that old wood smell.
